Airbnb operates an online marketplace focused on short-term accommodations and experiences. The company acts as an intermediary and charges a commission for each reservation. The company was founded in 2008.

In July 2014, Airbnb revealed design revisions to the site and mobile app and introduced a new logo called Bélo. It is intended to serve as a symbol of "belonging" and consists of four elements: a head to represent people, a location icon to represent a place, a heart to symbolize love, and a letter "A" to represent the name of the business. 

Airbnb launched "experiences", through which users can use the platform to book activities and tours.Airbnb has a review system where guests and hosts can rate and review each other after a stay.

Hosts and guests can't see reviews until both have submitted a review or the review period has closed.The accuracy and fairness of reviews can be negatively affected by concerns about future stays, as potential hosts may refuse to host a user who typically leaves negative reviews.

Company policy requires users to waive anonymity, which can also detract from users' willingness to leave negative reviews. These factors can damage the objectivity of the review system.
